Australian Shepherd Facts You Need To Know

  • Are you aware that Australian Shepherds should not have certain medications do to the MDR1 gene that some can carry?
Ex: Ivomec, Heartgard, Acepromazine (this information will be included in the puppy packet)
  • An Aussie’s coat should never be shaved. (a trim is ok)
  • Aussies are herders and may nip heels and knock down children.
  • May also want to chase cars, people, and livestock
  • Do you know what will happen if you breed a merle dog to another merle dog?  Up to 25% of the puppies will be hearing and/or vision impaired their whole life.
  • It is very important for the puppy to get all the necessary immunizations for its age. The puppy should not be  taken to public areas, where other dog’s immunization history is unknown, until the puppy has had all necessary immunizations.
  • Do not breed two natural bob tailed Aussies together.
  • You can ask your breeder about your dog’s tail or you can have a genetic test ran to tell you if your dog carries that gene.
  • Aussies tend to be very vocal.
  • Usually a couch potato life is not a life for an Aussie. They need plenty of exercise!
  • Exercise is good! Too much and too little exercise can have a bad effect on the joints.
  • During teething puppy ears may get a little wonky!
  • Taping/ Gluing ears (while not recommended) can help correct it and/or they may correct on their own.
  • Dogs (and pups) need to be on heartworm prevention all year round!
  • Trick and obedience training is important, but so is socialization!
  • Start handling their feet and trimming nails at an early age. It will help out in the long run!
  • We recommend crate training.
  • Even if you plan on not using the crate long term, having them know the crate is an okay place will be important if they need to stay at a vet, have company over, or in case of an emergency.
  • Aussies shed twice a year for 6 months at a time .
  • Prepare to never have privacy again!
